American Burgers in Mexico

Standard

Sound the horns and ring the bells I finally found the cheeseburger I have been roaming the streets and ducking into dark alleys looking for here in Mexico. We here at Roberto’s Bungalows love to eat! We got a tip from Chas and Eva Eller www.charlesellerstudios.com/ about an awesome burger place in Puerto Vallarta. All the tips up to this date have fallen short of a real tasty burger. You should know I have been looking for the ultimate cheeseburger for years. I started looking and even started a blog about it Back in December in 2010 in the San Francisco Bay Area. https://cookinwithearl.wordpress.com/2010/12/
I have spent many years looking for my favorite cheeseburger. For Over 35 years I was known as Cookin’ with Earl in local publications. I was always going to restaurants and doing reviews and in all my years my heart belonged to cheeseburgers. The Burger Bar in San Francisco and Taylor’s Refreshers in St. Helena (had me standing in line many days) held the top spots in the S.F. Bay Area. Well now I have one for you in Mexico called Jean’s located in Plaza Commercial real close to the airport. Hal and Eneida Hilton have opened their burger restaurant called Jean’s (named after Hal’s mother) in P.V. Let me say that the hand patties, the buttered buns grilled and crispy with the shredded lettuce and tomatoes made me melt into my stool. If that wasn’t enough we ordered a malt and a Vanilla shake that finally busted the curse of crappy shakes here in paradise. The California fries brought tears to my eyes, as I was dipping them into thousand island sauce and ketchup. Don’t go to P.V. Without making one of your stops Jean’s American Burgers

Cirque du Soleil theme park coming to The Riviera Nayarit

Standard

Roberto’s Bungalows which is about 25 minutes away
is proud to announce that
Cirque Du Soleil Theme Park To Open In Mexico
Cirque du Soleil has announced it’s opening a theme park in Mexico that will feature entertainment provided by the circus’ artists.

The park will be located in Nuevo Vallarta, a resort town near the larger Puerto Vallarta. It will be eveloped with theme park operator Grupo Vidanta and construction is expected to finish in 2018.

“Each experience within the entertainment park will be animated by Cirque du Soleil artists and follow a common storyline,” Cirque du Soleil and Grupo Vidanta said in a statement. The theme park “may” include a water park and nature park.

The park will have the capacity to allow 3,000 to 5,000 spectators for nightly performances. Details are still emerging, but rumor has it the plans also involve a water park and nature park. It will be set in Nuevo Vallarta, a planned community 15 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport and about 25 minutes from Roberto’s Bungalows in San Pancho.

Until then, Cirque fanatics can check out Joya, a performance and food show developed by Cirque du Soleil and Grupo Vidanta that debuts on Nov. 21 at the new 600-seat Vidanta Theater near the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya resort.

But the conceptual designs are sweet — the sort of eye-catching and whimsical aesthetics we’ve come to expect from Cirque du Soleil.
Gilles Ste-Croix is a Canadian entrepreneur and the vice president and co-creator of Cirque du Soleil is here with me in the blurry photo taken in San Pancho. What a great man he is, as he has shown us here in San Pancho. He has a heart for the children and this year he will put together 3 cirque de niños shows right here in San Pancho.

Left Mexico went to Kansas for a week and landed in SF yesterday with my wife and my baby dog. Left Kansas and the flight was to San Diego. Lots of tans and good looking folks all in one enormous rush. The Place was packed and not many people making eye contact, as they were all on their electronic leashes. Some folks were talking on their phones as if the person they were talking to was only 100 yards away and without a megaphone. The need to yell I feel made them either feel very important or they just never looked around to see that they were annoying everyone within about a 20 yard perimeter.

When we landed we were going to get on the Bart train, and you know as well as I do that picking up someone at the SF airport on a Friday night at rush hour is a real sign of a saint, or someone who just thinks the loss of your friendship could be devastating. The trains seem a lot louder and shakier than they did a few years ago and my dog and myself felt our safety was in jeopardy at best! The look in (my dogs) eyes was probably the same look my wife was seeing in mine.

Living in Mexico is 500% more mellow compared to riding on the rapid transit system. The blend of all the different races riding is awesome and very worldly. I must say that I did have a preconceived idea that I threw out to my wife while on the plane ride and it was about the safety of traveling with all our belongings in our suitcases and riding with others. I really don’t have a fear factor myself, but traveling with my wife sometimes I feel like she just might say something to the wrong person and get my ass wooped for speaking her truth.

Well the ride was going along just fine and I was feeling like all my preconceived thoughts were way off track. Just when I felt like I think the world isn’t as bad as I think sometimes a lovely couple of sweet young men came through the doors of our train. I do believe they were put there for our entertainment. Both the young men had that certain style of clothing design that I believe was brought to the fashion world from the San Francisco Bay Area just a few years ago. Pants on the ground! That look would be wearing the pants down by their knees and their boxer shorts completely showing. The fashion does have a few drawbacks and the one that is real obvious is running from the police. Many folks think the crime rate is up, but truth be known the bad guys can’t run very fast and so many of the criminals just can’t get away from the police, so arrests are way up. I believe that style is fading, but some haven’t got the message.

Heroin is something I have seen deteriorate the soul of many and it was real apparent in these fine looking gentlemen. The one starts screaming about how he’s going home to whip his bitches ass for talking back to him and it’s time for her to learn some respect. Then he’s ranting about kicking peoples asses on the Bart train for not respecting him. Then he pulls out a black marker and starts writing on the walls and all over the seats. I was relived that it was a marker and not a knife. I look over at my wife and she is looking over at him and I know she is going to say something that should be said, but I will probably be killed, or my face drawn on. I put my face in front of hers so she didn’t have eye contact with the fine gentleman. I was sure she was going to say something or mean face him and I was a bit paranoid that he might take it wrong.

You could tell His station was coming up and it seemed like he really had much more to write so he was frantically writing. The doors opened and my families safety seemed to have been given a pardon. He jumped out and the feeling of safety came over all inside the car. I got up and did notice that after he had gotten off the train that while he was writing he had spelled more than a few words wrong. I would like to think that it must have been having to hurry up.

looking at the days events all in all it went very well and we got to our exit station safely. I went over the chain of events that had happened from the airport in Mexico, Kansas, San Diego, and San Francisco. When you have thousands of people around you who are pleasant and respectful it really is not that unusual to have a few who for some reason beyond our thoughts seem so different. I feel for the young men and pray that they stay safe and alive and that something will touch their lives and they will become men who carry the message to young men to not go down the same road.

Cock-A-Doo-El-Do——–Cock-A-Doo-El-Do

To loud! Beautiful singing birds!
When will it stop? When will it ever stop?

Ok it’s time I tell a story about living here in Mexico.

There is something I miss now and then about the United States and that would be Peace and quiet! Yes peace and quiet.

Living in the United States I can’t recall having roosters wake me up in the last 69 years.
Here in Mexico in our little village it just isn’t the same. A few seasons ago my next door neighbor bought a rooster and it happened to be one without a sense of time of the day or night it was. The rooster would Cock-A-Dude-El-Do day and night as LOUD as loud can go. Starting at midnight and 3 in the morning 5 in the morning, 7 in the morning as he wanted to beat all the other roosters in the village to be the first to crow.

I went to my neighbor and asked if he would move the rooster somewhere and I would pay him, because I owned a hotel next door and my guests were getting a bit annoyed and he just looked at me and smiled. He couldn’t speak English and with the little Spanish I know it was a dead end talking to my neighbor.

At one point It started to get real crazy with the roosters never stopping. I went back over to the neighbors house and this time he was a little more understanding, as he nodded much more this time with a much bigger smile.

Well nothing changed and this went on for months and it got more irritating as the season went on. I had had it at one point and I decided to go over and up the amount of money I would pay or ask him if there was anything he wanted me to buy for him.

On my way over I stopped and told one of my guests what I was doing and she was smiling and I told her I was going to offer them $150.00 and she said make it $1500.00 and I will pay and maybe I can get some sleep. I told her if I was to offer $1500.00 for the rooster everyone in the village would buy one hoping their neighbor was getting annoyed.

Well I left for my vacation in August and September and to my surprise when we got home the rooster was gone. I thought about asking, but I left well enough alone.

Something I did notice was my neighbors across the street had bought a few more roosters while we were gone. I didn’t think much of it until the noise level had reached an all time high along with their dogs and chickens. They were now making noise 24 hours a day. Kind of like living in the middle of a Rooster zoo. Well I noticed many chickens running around and even started catching them in my courtyard. Before I could complain to the owners about the roosters I noticed that there were now about 15 to 20 birds.
Now it was time to go have a talk with my neighbors who I got along with very well.

I sat with the son and asked why they needed 18 roosters and he seemed to act like it was no big deal, but at the same time he was telling me about the roosters and he said that his daughter had a real hard time sleeping, because of them. Than he was telling me that his daughter was having a hard time in school, because of not being able to sleep. Then he said that his grandma who is about 90 likes to hear the roosters sing in the morning, so she keeps buying more.

SING? I didn’t know they were singing. I really never thought of it as singing. I just thought it was just a bunch of noise all night and day. Everyday I see the grandma out front of her house sweeping her leaves and listening to her roosters sing.

Well I am not someone to take away another persons joy, so I am just going to let it go and know that I am a very lucky to be a visitor in another country.

Oh Oh Mexico.

Nicole Swedlow with Entreamigos
will be honored for the work she does in San Pancho, Mexico
At the 2014 Event Heroes of Compassion

Nicole is a friend of mine in the village and one with a heart for the children. I understand the trials of a director of a huge non profit, as I was in the center as one in the S.F.bay area for 20 years. This is a job with no hours on a schedule just work. The task at hand is always tasks at hand. To see Nicole on any given day you would not believe she runs such a large operation. She always greets you with a smile that is ready for what you have to say. I have got to see from the beginning what compassion really means. I believe that they have really chosen not only a hero, but an angel sent to San Pancho to change the world one child at a time. Congratulations to you Nicole for a well deserved honor.

Wisdom in Action, a California Bay Area non-profit organization is for the fourth time presenting Unsung Heroes of Compassion on February 23, 2014 at the Ritz Carlton hotel in San Francisco, California.
This event is a celebration of the extraordinary effort of 51 individuals from around the globe who work to alleviate the suffering of others without expectation of reward. In addition to their acknowledgement by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the event is a call to action—a reminder that the well-being of our communities and, in fact our world, is ours to shape through our own daily acts of kindness and compassion.
Although His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a world-renowned Buddhist teacher, this is not a religious or political event, nor is Buddhism or Tibet its focus. The honorees are a diverse group of men and women representing different faiths, countries of origin and ways of working in the world. The characteristics they share with the world include kindness, quiet dedication to others and belief in the importance of caring for our underserved brothers and sisters.

This is the link for a live stream of the event as its happening on the 23rd of February
Unsung Heroes of Compassion
Live Webcast
Wisdom in Action will be providing a live webcast here of the Unsung Heroes of Compassion program on Sunday, February 23, 2014 beginning at 12:50 P.M. Pacific Standard Time.
Individuals can access the webcast from any computer, and we are also encouraging individuals, groups, and organizations to host viewing parties of the event. Hosting a viewing party is your opportunity to come together to witness this special event, hear His Holiness the Dalai Lama speak about compassion and take part in this celebration of the extraordinary effort of 51 individuals from around the globe who work to alleviate the suffering of others without expectation of reward.

This is her story
Nicole Swedlow

Jace and Ali have grown up in Nayarit, Mexico, sharing their mom, Nicole Swedlow, with an entire community. “It isn’t always fair or easy,” says Nicole, “but I hope that they have learned that life and family and work are all inspired by the same seeds of passion and love.”

Nicole learned this lesson from her parents at an early age. “My very first job was picking up nails on my father’s job sites,” she says. “At some point I graduated from picking up nails to pounding them, then to painting and to helping in the construction of homes with my dad. I helped build my family home when I was 14. Three years later, after it burned down, I helped build it again.” Nicole says these skills, along with those she learned in the Girl Scouts— “a little art, a little sewing, a little resource- fulness”—have been key to the success of Entreamigos, the nonprofit organization she founded in 2006.

More than 12 years ago, after completing college in the U.S., Nicole spent time traveling in Mexico. She eventually fell in love with the sleepy coastal town of San Francisco in the state of Nayarit. She says, “I didn’t come to Mexico to start a nonprofit. But I was living in this tiny town that needed and really wanted the opportunities of tourism, but didn’t seem quite prepared to make the most of it. There were serious economic and educational needs in the village, and people arriving in the community who had skills and resources to offer, yet the connection between the two wasn’t happening. It seemed like with just a little impulse or a little bridging, everyone’s best intentions could help San Francisco grow in a healthy, community- centered way.”

Nicole wrote what she refers to as a “mini- manifesto,” an idealistic plan for what San Francisco could be if everyone worked together. She explains what happened next: “A friend who is a former teacher offered to support me for a year so I could try to make my vision a reality. He told me, ‘If you don’t do it now, you will always wonder.’ That is how Entreamigos was born.”

The nonprofit began small—offering community art classes and establishing a store to sell locally made crafts. Other classes quickly followed because, Nicole says, “at Entreamigos we believe that everyone has something to teach and everyone has something to learn.”

In 2009, the Nayarit state government gave Entreamigos the rights to remodel an abandoned milk processing facility on the town’s main street. “The community came together to remodel the facility using a ‘green’ design, and it now serves many purposes,” Nicole says. “Approximately 150 kids use the facility each day for classes in technology, sports, circus, art, or just to read a book in the library or get help with homework. Adults come as well for classes, workshops, and conferences. In 2013, we offered more than 700 classes to the community. One of the hardest things for us to do now is to keep track of it all and to let people know about everything that is happening.”

Nicole explains that she learned a valuable lesson about scale and impact through the experience of Entreamigos’ scholarship program. “At one time in the early years we had 150 kids on scholarship,” she says, “but we really couldn’t keep track of them all. Today we have about 70 kids but we know everything about them, their families, and their challenges. We also know that every single one will be able to go to college if they choose to. That is a generational change that will be of true long- term value in our small community.”
Nicole’s decision to create her family’s life in Mexico was not an easy one. But, in her words, “If you believe in something with the whole of your heart then you have to jump in with two feet and go all the way to the deep end.”

Riviera Nayarit Named Top Destination
in “Where to Travel in 2014”
by Arthur Frommer

I first met Arthur Frommer when he invited me to New York to be a guest on his television show. As a young travel entrepreneur, Mr. Frommer immediately made a lasting impression on me. Arthur Frommer treated me as an equal, as a colleague, asking me my opinions and even asked me what destinations I liked and why. It was that one day of filming at Grand Central Station in New York City that changed my life forever as a travel aficionado and propelled me into my life long profession as a travel entrepreneur.

Recently at the Los Angeles Times Travel Show at the L.A. Convention Center, travel enthusiasts had the opportunity to meet various authorities in the field of travel. The key note speaker was none other than travel extraordinaire, father of travel writing and creator of the first modern travel guide books, the incomparable, Arthur Frommer.

As anybody with a pulse on travel knows, “when Frommer speaks, travelers, industry insiders and the world listens.”

At the end of each year, travel experts, the likes of Lonely Planet, Travel & Leisure, and Arthur Frommer make their picks for hot travel destinations for the upcoming year. Mr. Frommer shared his picks for 2014 in a jam packed hall at the L.A. Times Travel Show, at Los Angeles Convention Center.

While Frommer mentioned the Indonesian island of Bali as a travel hot spot, going on the mention that one can live on $10.00 a day in Bali. Also mentioning India, but reminded travelers to watch out for their safety, and Japan made the list due to a plummeting yen, stretching the U.S. dollar, and providing good value. Frommer was clear on his number one, next hot spot in world.

The stretch of land north of Puerto Vallarta, the Mexican state of Riviera Nayarit, with miles of endless beaches, over 300 sun drenched days a year, in a safe part of the world. Not too surprising that the Mexican government is on a mission to build up this 200 mile stretch of land into the next tourist gateway for foreigners traveling to Mexico.

We would love to see you soon!

San Pancho preforming arts center! Grand Opening

Standard

On the 19th of January of 2014 the first show of the year in the new theatre in San Pancho opened to a sell out crowd. We were lucky enough to get tickets ahead of time and got to sit in the front row. We brought a few friends and our mom and dad 87 and 85 years young.
We all enjoyed the Judy Garland show which was her in her dressing room going over her life with everything that had happened to her. The preformance was excellent and the story line was so informative about her whole life. Some very funny parts and some very tragic all mixed into a great performance. I really didn’t know that much about Judy Garland, but by the end of the show I felt like I had heard from an old friend!
Watching our mom smile when Judy would reference the stars names from that era was priceless! Watching our dad was priceless also, as he has Alzheimer’s and I really believe he thought it was Judy Garland!
Thank you to Glades Bibingka and those who helped make this dream a reality. Thank you for all your hard work to make an arts theatre a place in San Pancho. I believe one of the great things that San Pancho will be known for is our love for the arts and the theatre. Thank you San Pancho people for all your help In making San Pancho such a wonderful place to live!

The quality of the produce and the food products are top quality. We come over from Roberto’s Bungalows in San Pancho and see many friends from our town enjoying the market. The quality and the freshness of the products are fast becoming the highlight of many of us who live here full time. The coffee, the flowers, the art, the jewelry, the people and so much more are great reasons to visit Sayulita on Friday’s and bring home food for your week that will keep you smiling! We came home and had an awesome organic beet salad that was out of this world along with some fresh dorado.

Tequila drinking on the rise
!JUST ANOTHER TEQUILA SUNRISE!

Tequila (Spanish pronunciation: [teˈkila]) or as the Americans say…Ta kill ya!

Tequila is the distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, in the highlands (Los Altos) of the north western Mexican state of Jalisco.

Tequila is the smoooooooooth drink that is now taking the world in a whole new direction. From the pueblo of San Pancho where you can find Roberto’s Bungalows it’s a two and a half hour beautiful drive up highway 200 through the jungle of the Nayarit coast into the farmlands into Tequila.

I drove through Tequila a few years ago and it was a beautiful site, as it reminded me so much of the Napa Valley. The rows of the Blue Agave plants are everywhere the flat lands and up and down the mountains just as the rows of the grapes are in the Napa Valley. The city itself was beautiful and spotless. I have friends who have restaurants in the United States who come down and pick their special barrels of Tequila for their customer’s enjoyment. Tequila is becoming the new sipping drink of the elite and tasking it in a whole new direction. The tequila drinker of the past was the one who did the salt, shoot and bite the lime drink over and over until they passed out is looking like a thing of the past. The tee shirt that comes to mind when talking about Gringo drinking tequila in Mexico is “One tequila, two tequila, three tequila… FLOOR”.

The new smooth tequila is fast becoming the NEW drink of the stars. Justin Timberlake has partnered with Sauza tequila to launch Sauza 901 a super-premium tequila, which bears the numbers of Timberlake’s hometown area code in Memphis, Tennessee. The brand will have a presence at Justin Timberlake’s world tour, The 20/20 Experience, with a Sauza 901 bar at every show.

Justin Say’s “My love for tequila began a few years ago after I visited the tequila heartland of Jalisco, Mexico, and saw the passion and craftsmanship that goes into every bottle,” “That trip inspired me to create 901”.

Sean (Diddy) Combs is another Star on the run to make Tequila the next expensive sipping drink.
Diageo and Combs Wine & Spirits have formed a 50-50 joint venture to acquire DeLeón – which can sell for more than $1,000 a bottle – for an undisclosed sum.
Diageo said DeLeón will boost its share of the “ultra premium” tequila market, which includes brands that sell for more than $40 a bottle. Diageo also has another upmarket tequila, Don Julio. Both DeLeón and Don Julio sit at the higher end of the price scale compared to Jose Cuervo, which Diageo stopped distributing in the US in July.
DeLeón has five variants, varying in price from $120 to more than $1,000, and is popular among US musicians and in Hollywood, the drinks company said.

So my suggestion is if you are paying $1,000 dollars for a bottle of Tequila you better sip it. I’m not sure if this is the tequila you should be making frozen Margarita’s out of. So as I see it the days of slamming Tequila are reserved to the crazy American who hasn’t quite got the message yet. Which living down here I can say it probably won’t change much for the tequila drinking vacationing youngsters enjoying throwing up and hanging out with the toilet bowl as your date for the evening for Spring Break each year, or the parents who find that an all inclusive stay gives you a free pass to all the tequila you can drink and we are not talking Justin’s or Diddy’s top of the line tequila.

I think it’s time to book a vacation to Roberto’s Bungalows while you can still get a sip of tequila for free with a trip to Tequila with Earl and Jane and we can be your designated drivers and you can sip your way through a beautiful day in the beautiful City of TequilA and buy a couple of bottles while you can still afford it!

Living in San Pancho has opend my eyes to not only the beauty that the ocean and the sky has to offer, but the peace and tranquility that come with it each day. I feel like the art in the sky each day needs to be shared with those who can’t be here. There are many places on the planet that have breath taking sunsets, but I believe I have landed in the Sunset Capitol of the world.
